In Florida, it can be a misdemeanor or a felony to abuse, kill or confine an animal without sufficient food, water or exercise. Animal cruelty as a misdemeanor is a crime punishable by up to 12 months in jail and a maximum fine of $5,000. Aggravated animal cruelty is a third-degree felony and punishable by a prison sentence up to 5 years and a maximum fine of $10,000. If a defendant is charged with intentionally torturing an animal, they face a fine of $2,500 and must complete anger management classes. A second conviction can have them paying $5,000 and six months jail time.
