Sex Offender Restrictions Eased in Miami-Dade County

I frequently get calls and emails from people telling me how difficult it is for them or for a family member to comply with various sex-offender restrictions.  Based upon the following article that appeared on January 22, 2010 in the Miami Herald, it appears that legislators in Miami-Dade County, Florida are being told the same thing and that they had the good sense to ease some of the restrictions in that county.

If sex offenders are to have any hope of getting better and not worse upon release from prison, we cannot continue to treat them like animals and give them no place to live and at least attempt to be a proper member of a community.

This is a good article, but the news has changed. A week ago today approximately 20 sex offenders were kicked out of the living spaces that the Homeless Trust and Lutheran Services had secured for them. Many were told to simply go stay in the parking lot of their PO for the weekend.

The residency laws may have been "eased" in Miami-Dade County, but the issue is far from resolved. Florida legislators have decided the solution to ill-conceived and counterproductive residency laws is to increase the statewide laws from 1000 feet to 1750. While it may "ease" restrictions in Miami, it will cause more urban areas to struggle with JTC style camps zcross Florida.

I'm a criminology major and I can tell you what they are doing to these men is not going to help them in any bit. The reason sex offenders recidivate is because they feel shunned by society and that's exactly what Miami-Dade county is doing. They aren't going to make things better for themselves, they are only going to make them worse. Get a warehouse, put some "beds" in it and there ya go. A place to live as well as a place that these sex offenders can be monitored.
